Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music, and ideas is back in 2017 from May 26th. Every year the event gets bigger and better with new light installations, expanded areas, music, events, and more. This year is no different with Vivid Sydney saying it is going to be “bigger, bolder, brighter”.
Vivid started in Circular Quay, with light installations along the harbourside, on the sails of the Opera House, and on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Over the years Darling Harbour, Martin Place, Chatswood, and more were added with Royal Botanic Gardens and Taronga Zoo joining last year.
So what is new for 2017?
Firstly, Barangaroo, Sydney’s newest precinct that has recently gone through a $6-billion+ urban renewal will be joining Vivid for the first time.
Laneways will be filled with light installations while a wide variety of food and beverage stands will be designed to create a “foodie” paradise. Experience an outdoor theatre of light and sound with A Day in the Light, or Barangaroo Past through optical illusions with Trapdoor.
Expanded Royal Botanic Gardens
Last year the Light Walk expanded east of the Sydney Opera House into the Royal Botanic Gardens. It proved to be quite popular, therefore this year it will be extended.
The trail will take you further along the harbourside gardens. On the way, you will see rare Rowi species of the New Zealand kiwi glow and pulse with colour as part of the Birds Of Lumos display. Dipping Birds, large 2.5-meter illuminated sculptures, will dip back and forth into a pond – changing colours as they do.
Another, unnerving addition is the display for You Lookin’ at me? – large, illuminated eyes within the ground, watching you as you pass by.
Another new display will be a pop-up landmark called Sydneyland. This is where you can expect to capture amazing photos with an iconic photo backdrop.
Lights for the Wild will be returning to Taronga Zoo, with a few new characters and surprises. Martin Place in the heart of Sydney CBD will again include popular food and beverage stands, with a new multi-award winning 3D mapping projection called Urban Tree 2.0.
In Darling Harbour, twenty-eight tonnes of water will be thrown into the air every minute, with lasers, flame jets, music, and fireworks.
Vivid Sydney will run over 23 nights from Friday 26 May to Saturday 17 June. Most lights will be shining from 6 pm until 11 pm. There will also be more than 250 gigs with Vivid Music, and over 200 workshops, keynotes, and seminars with Vivid Ideas.
